Celebs Pages Redesign

Watchapedia is a content metadata(like encyclopedia) and review service. I restructured the celebs page to allow users to easily explore each celebrity's work by category and credit. This enhancement received positive feedback from web communities and app marketplaces, strengthening our reputation as a professional content service.

As the sole designer for this project, I led the entire design process, including :

Background

Celebs Search Feature Led Rise in VoC of Celebs Page

After rolling out a search feature update enabling "celebs search," Celebs page visits have increased, indicating that more users discovered it. However, this has led to an increase in VoC feedback about the challenges of navigating a celebrity's career on the page, impacting the perceived reliability of our service as a content metadata provider.

Collecting VoC and Analyzing Problems

Most VoC complaints pointed out challenges in browsing celebrities' works. By analyzing this feedback and conducting diary research and interviews, I identified the specific problems.

"Right now, Seoul Art Cinema is having a special screening of films directed by a famous actor named Kinuyo Tanaka, but on Watchapedia, I can't see all the films directed by him at once, and it's hard to tell if he directed or acted in them..."

UX Problems

Non-intuitive Structure and Lack of Information Hierarchy Creating Difficulty in Understanding a Celebrity's Career

01. Difficulty in Differentiating Between Credits or Categories

A celebrity's workpieces on Watchapedia were arranged chronologically, resulting in a mixed assortment of works from various categories.

02. Insufficient Data to Understand the Celebrity's Contribution to Each Content

The page's limited information—poster, title, rating, and category— was insufficient for understanding the relationship between the celebrity and the work pieces. This shortage makes it difficult to discern the celebrity's credits in each work.

Exploring and Getting Internal Company Feedback to Deal with Challenges

01. Ideal Filtering Structure for Ease of Use

In Korean, some credits like 'writer' share names across categories—movies, TV shows, and books—while others, like 'director,' vary by category, leading to user confusion. To mitigate this, I prioritized filtering data by category followed by credit to address this issue.

02. Layouts for Optimal Browsing in Any Case

I explored various layouts focusing on key factors. Firstly, I prioritized a celebrity's primary career, simultaneously revealing the range of categories or credits the individual contributed. Also, I ensured pleasant usability even for celebrities who worked for only one category or credit.

Improving Celebrity Pages with Organized Categories, Comprehensive Information, and Responsive Interfaces

01. Navigating Celebrity Careers through Organized Filters

I introduced tabs and filters to organize celebrities' contributions by category and credit. In addition, an automatic filter prioritizes the most relevant category and credit based on the number of works, making it easier to explore the significant career of the celebrity.

02. Expanded Data for a Fuller Understanding

Considering that the primary task of this page is to understand the career of the individual the user searched for, I added relevant data such as the year and the roles they played. Also, I restructured the layout into a list view, which creates more space to display information and reduces truncated cases.

03. Responsive Layouts for Optimal Navigation in Web Environment

I aimed for optimal usage across all web breakpoints. So, I sectioned categories and credits for effortless navigation and provided in-page links on the right side of the screen so users could move between sections quickly.

Result

Validating Improvements and User Satisfaction

Positive feedback from web communities and app stores confirmed the success of the new feature, significantly reducing related VOC feedback. Also, this update strengthened our brand's image as a professional content service and effectively met heavy users' needs.
